Known for her avant garde performance style and detail-oriented instruction, Frederique comes once again to The Oasis to share her ever-evolving urban bellydance with her So. Cal fans. Saturday, July 25 Workshop: "Living for Layering"* ~ Special 3-hour workshop! Frédérique's comprehensive approach to layering is for those who are interested in solidifying their technique, or those who simply want to learn how to layer. She will go over the fundamentals in what makes layering delectable to your spectators and peers alike, and why. We will work on articulating our hips and chest assisted by technique and fluidity while we drill: variations in time signatures with our hips / shimmies and chest isolations, while adding other flourishes to express your moment with the music. The frame work of your articulations; head, arm, and leg placement will be heavily scrutinized. Recommended: Take your B vitamins and boost your brain power before entering class. Class begins with a short lecture and ends with Q and A. *This is a mixed level class. Sunday, July 26 Workshop: Frédérique has applied her knowledge of both the gym; teaching strength training, and belly dance to form a specific focus on drills for belly dancers. Be prepared to challenge your body and mind. This workshop will focus on advanced isometric exercises with drills created specifically for belly dancers to develop control and muscle memory. This focus will aid in making difficult movements look effortless with an emphasis on balance, the separation between upper and lower body, fluidity, and an eye for structural composition. The Oasis is your Southern California connection for classes with Carolena Nericcio, founder & director of FatChanceBellyDance. August brings our annual week-long intensive with Pimp Masta 'C', offering 15 hours of General Skills for ATS and 10 hours of ATS Teacher Training. General Skills for ATS ~ $700 per student A 15 hour intensive presenting all 70+ steps from the FCBD ATS vocabulary along with cues, formations, lead and follow, chorus, music theory for ATS and functional anatomy for dance. Students must attend all 15 hours, no exceptions. Certificate awarded upon completion. Three 5-hour days with 2 hours total for breaks, lunch and drills, seven studio hours total. For previous graduates of GS for ATS wanting a review, or students who are not interested in being Certified. Attend single days of GS for ATS. Curriculum with include instruction on how to present the concept of ATS, the steps, verbal instruction, physical cueing, assessing students needs, answering common questions, structuring a class and troubleshooting. Limited to 10 people. **This training is stage one for teachers interested in becoming a FCBD Sister Studio. Sister Studios teach exclusively FCBD format. Students need approval from Carolena to be considered for Sister Studio status.

North Carolina's, The Mezmer Society makes their Southern California debut at The Oasis! Join us for a weekend of "Lush Cabaret & Balkan Ruckus" including (but not limited to) belly dance, cabaret performance, Romany music, foppish occultism, unapologetically pretentious Belle Epoque café living, goodwill, bad behavior, misappropriated pop songs, and the horribly misguided notion that one can try and squeeze an entire Balkan brass band into one accordion. Saturday, October 3 Workshops: "Feisty Fanwork & Combinations"* ~ Special 3-hour workshop! A class inspired in equal parts by Flamenco, the fine art of flirtation, and every performer's need to capture the audience. Onça's Fan Fusion is long on musicality, emotive power, attitude and upper body strength. Savor the flavor of passion as we explore the potential of every artist's indispensable tool; the Fan. This class offers sassy combinations that can be used by artists of every genre to captivate and communicate. *Most fans will work: feather fans and fan veils will be discussed, but are not usable for the purposes of class. "Sing, Gadje, Sing"* This class is for everyone - dancers, musicians and laypersons who want to participate in making the party Happen. Come as you are to learn melodies and harmonies to several Balkan tunes that we will later sing together in the evening showcase! *No prior experience with reading, or singing music, required. "Swordwork: Swanky, Sultry & Silly"* Sword is one of Onça's favorites. The synergy of a shining sword and a skilled artist is incredibly powerful. Yet, making the most of the power of the blade requires attention, respect, and a strong sense of narrative. In addition to dynamic combinations for soloists and ensembles, learn a bit about sustainable technique, history, and the care & feeding of swords. This workshop is open to all levels and suitable for artists of all genres. *Students must bring their own sword. "Cane Dancing: Foxy or Folkloric?"* It's all how you handle the big stick. Cane, or 'Raks Assaya', is a traditional woman's dance art that offers tremendous creative expression to bellydance artists. Building on our universal vocabulary of movements, we will drill sustainable cane technique and explore versatile combos with attitude. Saturday, November 7 Workshops: "ABS-OLUTELY FABULOUS!"* It's time to BELLY dance! This special workshop will focus exclusively abdominal technique and core strength and laying the foundation for truly incredible abdominal work. Learn how to flutter and achieve amazing belly rolls ~ We will drill rolls upwards, downwards and from side to side! You will also learn to LAYER your abdominal movements, like the amazing "flundulation", a flutter layered over a belly roll; or combining abdominal work with figure eights and upper torso isolations. Also: stomach pops, many types of body waves and undulations, muscular and breath control. Pretty soon you'll be yellin', "That's Just How I Roll!" Also: tips for photographic make-up (both color and black and white) and tricks for fantasy fun, like going wild with glitter, bindis and color. Saturday, December 5 Workshops: "Tribal Belly Dance Home Practice Formulas & Technique Drills"* This workshop will give you technical formulas that you can easily do at home to improve your performance, endurance, dance conditioning and technique. Various isolation drills and technique combos to condition your ability and strength. You will receive five practice formulas, one for each day of the work week, easy to do easy to stick too and most of all FUN. Your ability as a dancer will improve within the first week of use, following this guided workshop. *Beg-Advanced levels welcome.
